Hi, all,

Thought I would share a poem I wrote a while ago about my beautiful Solly when he was going through the terrible chewing stage. Hope you enjoy. Love you my beautiful boy, forever and always.

SOLLY’S SALAD DAYS

I acquired my puppy from a big farm in Wales,
I’d bought him instead of some goods in the sales.
A sweet German Shepherd, all cuddly and cute.
He didn't come cheap, he'd cost me some loot!

I named my pooch Solly, and settled him in,
I’d had dogs before so knew where to begin.
It took time to train him, he had his own way,
All he would do was eat, poop, sleep and play.

Weeks passed and oh Lord, he started to chew,
The evidence there ... a big hole in my shoe.
Chomping his way through carpets and socks,
And a curious fetish for a big cardboard box.

I caught him one day sprawled out on the floor
Gnawing his way through my new bathroom door.
He looked up at me with a glint in his eye,
It was hard not to laugh, and hard not to cry.

One morning his stomach looked heavily distended,
On the floor bits of slippers that he had befriended,
So off to the vet I raced with my mutt
To extract the Road Runner from his greedy gut.

His munching got worse, exceedingly dire,
Nibbling his way through the telephone wire.
Next to fall prey were the legs of my table
And his teeth soon demolished the television cable.

When I found my new belt of Italian leather,
I really had reached the end of my tether.
The mangled remains, I could not raise a chuckle
As all that was left was a large silver buckle.

Came the time when the nibbling was brought to an end,
And I was so grateful my mischievous friend
Had come to no harm with his munchin’ and chewin’,
Though my wonderful home he’d managed to ruin!

This is so cute! I really loved reading the poem and smiled all the way through it!  I adopted LM when he was older and never had to go through a chewing phase, but can imagine how funny and frustrating it can be at the same time!

Thank you, Ann. The chewing time is extremely funny, but it can also be frustrating for sure. My Solly wasn't as bad as some dogs who seem to make chewing a lifetime hobby. He stopped chewing after a few weeks, in the home anyway. He loved to chew his toys and sticks were another favourite although I didn't let him munch on sticks often. I would throw a stick and when he started to chomp, I would take it off him. I didn't want his tummy to be full of tiny splinters, which could have caused damage.
