Hi all i'm a new member I have a 5yr old rotty named booker and he had a lump in his throat back in october and an abcess on the side of his face went to the female vet at my vets office and they said the lump could be his saliva gland. They put him on antibiotics and everything got better lump went from baseball size to marble size. vet said don't worry unless it gets worse. Fast forward to this month. Noticed the one lump turned to two one on each side of his neck they were not very big so didn't worry and figured i'd call vet to make appointment. overnight his throat swelled up and everytime he barked or whined he'd yelp with pain. i accidentally bumped his thorat when putting his harness on and he yelped. went to vets yesterday afternoon and see the older male vet. The vet felt his lymph nodes and said "your not going to like this. It's lyphoma and he has about two weeks to live." Wow was i floored i asked if we could get a biopsy or test done to confirm it and he said we could but there's no point. That i should have him put down. So he gave booker 10 days worth of prednsone and sent us home with a qoute for having him put down and instuctions for me to look up canaine lypohma on the internet and do all the research i can but don't listen to all the quacks on the internet. (a year ago booker had hurt his front left paw and had a slight limp and when we had gone to the vets he had told me he had hip displayisa which he does not have.) So i came home and called another vets office that i used to use when i lived up in a different area and have an appointment set up for next friday the 23rd. I explained everything and they are going to try to get him in earlier. so i'm at a loss i know booker has been drinking more lately and acting like he has cotton mouth so i'm hopeful (maybe that's not a good idea) that maybe it's not cancer. I just don't know what to do right now. Booker is like my son my son is all torn up said he don't want to lose his brother and that he's going to find a cure for cancer when he grows up (he's 9)

Hi Heather,
So so sorry for the situation you find yourself and Booker in...I know there are no words to ease the fears, the worries and the torment inside.   I just went through this with one of my girls in September and know those are amongst the most devastating words one can hear about our special fur one...We went through the antibiotics, [thinking it was pancreatitis], then the prednisone and too did not put our girl through a biopsy [because of her age - 12 and because of the advanced degree to which the specialist felt the canine lymphoma had advanced - into the bone marrow]  This was a shock as our pup was never ill a day in her whole life.  Our girl Kassee too was given very little time - and while we took her home with us after the last ultrasound and devastating prognosis we knew it was for her sake that very shortly we needed to make that fateful decision...And it was so so difficult - she was still trying to be her 'old self' but not eating and wasting away.  Nothing about this is easy as our special fur ones rely on us to make all the decisions and make the right decisions at the right time for them...It is so agonizing to wander through this prognosis and have to deal with all the questions, the heartbreak and ultimately the guilt and second guessing.  It is so good you are getting a second opinion, as today I still find myself mired in the maybes, should haves and might haves.  Our pups are so resilient and live probably many days with hurts, aches and illnesses without ever letting us know - it just is what it is for them but when the time comes when they can no longer deal with it alone they turn to us.  Canine lymphoma is relentless and really robs our special ones of their vitality, their "golden years" and their comfort...I am so so sorry for you and Booker and your son...Stay in touch with people on this forum...here there is understanding, acceptance and many, many kind, caring and special people.  If only we could will them back to health, or wish for a miracle - I do believe our fur ones understand though and know your love is forever as theirs is.  And, I do feel there is never a greater love than the eyes of a fur one show...Wishing and praying Booker's doing ok and the second opinion turns out to be better news...Love him each and every day.

Hi Heather,

I’m so sorry for all you’re going through with Booker. I don’t blame you for wanting a second opinion —I would want one too. I really think that’s a good idea, especially since the first lump went down with antibiotics. It may just have been a coincidence, but I think it’s worth checking out. And if you need to confirm it’s lymphoma with an actual test before making life and death decisions, I say do it if you are willing and have the means.

Cancer is an awful diagnosis and can take our pets down quickly. But especially considering he’s only 5, I think it’s worth getting more information. The only thing is, being that the lumps are large and he’s uncomfortable, you may want to get in sooner than next Friday. Are there any other vets or even an oncologist vet you can try?

Whatever the case, hang in there! This is difficult, but information is power. Do what you can. Sometimes there are holistic things that can help, herbs and things you might want to look into if you’re into that. These usually can be started right away while you’re waiting for your appointment.

I looked up some information, and you may find this article helpful:

Here’s hoping for the best! Give Booker a pat from us.

the lumps are tiny now and the swelling in his neck is gone all he is on right now is predinsone and overnight gone after drooling for awhile. he's not in any pain now. i've been doing research and cervical mucocele physically presents as lyphoma and the syptoms all fit with it he's had no other syptoms of end stage lyphoma. i'm hoping like hell the vet was wrong. Bookers his normal self today playing and barking.

How is Booker doing? I'm so glad you didn't take just one opinion and I'm also glad he was doing better last time you posted here. I'm also hoping the vet was wrong and that the new vets can figure out what's really going on with your baby. We're here for you! Stay strong!

well vet did blood work and aspirated the only lypmh node that was a little large and it turns out he has lyme disease and not lymphoma. She was also happy that i had started weaning him off the prednisone. Thank you all for your thoughts while i went through this hope you all don't mind that even though he don't have cancer that Booker and i stick around and try to help and be there for others. it was so scary going through this.

Heather,

I am so, so GLAD you went to a different vet. Please don’t ever go back to that previous one! I’m so very happy and relieved for you both that Booker does not have cancer. Lyme disease is not a picnic in the park, but compared to cancer... whew!

Yes, for sure stick around as much as you want!

never going back to that vet makes me wonder though how many other dogs this guy has misdiagnosed and people lost due to it. Everyone here has been so wonderful to us there is so much information on everything.
