Your Neva certainly has a lot of thoughts and prayers for recovery going her way!  She has really touched our hearts.  She is a young dog and seems to be strong.   We are all hoping for a miraculous recovery and  it seems to be possible.  As others have said, I hope you will keep us updated.    What draws most of us to this website is loss of an animal but I know we are all wanting a different outcome for you.  We want a happy ending which would mean recovery and you taking her home.

I can't believe I missed this post somehow, but I'm glad I found it now.  You and Neva are in my thoughts and prayers.

There are several organizations that help people provide life-saving care when they can't afford it on their own. One of them you might want to check with is called IMOM (In Memory Of Magic) and you can find them at http://www.imom.org

You could also start a Chip-In account to raise money for Neva's treatment from friends and family.  If you're on facebook, post it there and invite all of your friends to share the link with their friends. Or start a group page for Neva and invite everyone you know.  It's amazing how many people will hear your plea and chip in to help you out.  I believe that with a Chip In, you can close the account when you have collected what you need, so you won't end up having to pay anyone back.

Those are just a few ideas I had to try to help you and Neva.  She is so beautiful, and such an amazing trooper, gong through all of this.  I'm sending my prayers and virtual hugs to all of you now.  Please keep us posted.

Neva's Mom, I hope you are able to read the posts.  I'm so happy Susie told you about things you can do to raise money for medical treatment.  I didn't know about any of that.  Neva's need for surgery or specialized medical treatment has been SO heavy on my heart.  I would certainly contribute if you can set something up as Susie suggested.  Still praying for you, your family, and Neva.  I really want this special dog to make it!

It just occurred to me that you could see if you can get one of your local television news stations to cover Neva's story too.  They could advertise a Chip-In page, and link to it on their web site.  I know donations for Neva's surgery would come pouring in .I just sent you a private message about this too.

Prayers continue for Neva's recovery.

I'm so sorry to miss so many posts.  I thought I was getting emails notices when new posts came.  So when susie (thank you susie for the information for financial assistance. We tried a few things and now this gives us more options) sent me a private message, I was surprised to see all the new posts. Actually, thank you all sooooooo much for the posts. Now I can cry about that too. I am forever ever grateful to find others who I relate to, can talk to and that understand. I still have a hard time talking about it and "pretend" I am doing good & I am strong. I realized some people pass judgment because Neva is "just a dog".  I try to be respectful because I know there are other pets hurting, starving, oil spill, polar bears dying, cancer kids, cancer adults, etc. But Neva is a HUGE part of my very small family.

Today is one week since the porcupine incident.  And thanks for everyone for helping me get through this week.

I went through so many emotions all week.....sadness and guilt being the top two.  I also went through the vet telling us to saying good-bye, thinking she was leaving. And me wanting to at least be able to tell Neva I'm sorry. Which I keep doing.

She is breathing on her own and her pulse ox is better. The quill(s) caused a neumothorax (air building up in the chest cavity).  They also caused a puncture to her trachea and caused a neumomediospinum (air build up in the neck that is leaking into the chest cavity).  We're not sure if these two are related or not.  She definitely suffered a puncture/contusion to her lung at some point, but the 'best guess' is that the quill(s) has moved on to who-knows where. Which they say is one of the biggest risks. Over the last two days the neumothorax has decreased and the neumomediospinum is slightly better. The lungs/trachea/esphogas apparently have the ability to heal themselves, so we hope.

Here is some promising news: she has been breathing on her own, her pulse ox is good, she's eating, drinking, licking us, wagging her tail, wanting to be pet and can now walk around a bit.  She is on pain meds & antibiotics. One of the greatest thing..... we haven't had to pay for her last 3 nights.

AND>>>>>

They are going to allow us to bring her home with strict restrictions and care.  We live at 9,000 feet so the next 48 hours home will be important (the vet is at 5,280 feet).  My son is still asking about her. He says "Nemaaa Doctor".

It's encouraging that things are getting better without surgery and now 1/3 of the staff at the vet's office think *maybe* she will improve without surgery.  They also say at anytime another quill could puncture her heart, artery.  But we will never know.  They found another quill yesterday and we can feel one "floating" around under her skin that we are waiting to work it's way out.  So, at this point (and because of what we can't afford to do) all we can really do at this point is hope for the best and wait. With any luck, she will CONTINUE to get better & better and we will never have to think about surgery.  The vet has allowed us a payment plan.

It's encouraging but we won't know for about 3 weeks if she is really past the most critical part.

What is ironic.....because there is so much guilt involved about so many things (and I also keep reading on this forum how many feel guilt)...is that I also feel guilty that all of you have suffered, your little/big ones are not with you, are still missing them, will always miss them..and Neva is coming home. So I also have guilt that it's not fair, everyone is so wonderful to help me, and I don't mean to be uncaring or even self-absorbed.  So I'm sorry if I am hurting anyone. Very sorry.

Lastly, today is Monday. I won't be able to post again until Sunday.  Unless I can figure out how to log in on my phone.  I promise I will again, unless this is too difficult for some. But it will just be a few days, maybe Friday or Saturday I can.

So much thanks for all the caring. I am hopeful but scared that Neva can pull through. If she does, for every kiss she gives me, I will send to all of your dogs & cats & other pets that are still so very missed.

Neva's Mom,
I'm so glad we heard from you!  PLEASE don't feel guilty because we lost our little ones and yours might pull through!  I think I can say for sure we are ALL pulling for Neva to make it through this ordeal.   I know I have been praying for your family and Neva and, according to the posts, many others have too.  It just doesn't seem like it is Neva's time yet, she is too young!  This story has really pulled at my heartstrings and I will be really sad if Neva doesn't make it!  So, please don't feel guilty about our losses.  Our losses have nothing to do with Neva except that we DON'T want you to go through the same thing.  I was very happy to read that Neva is doing so much better and might be able to come home.  That was the news I was hoping to hear!  As I said earlier, if Neva needs surgery and you were able to set up some kind of a fund, I would certainly contribute.  Please keep us posted when you are able.  Good news about Neva is good news for us!

I agree with donnalee, don't feel guilty.  There isn't one person in this forum that would want you to feel that way.  We all want Neva to be home where they belong and be well.  You are in my thoughts.

Please don't ever feel guilty because your Neva is coming home when our friends are not. You are giving us reason to celebrate each small victory, and that is a beautiful thing.  We need celebration more than ever when we are in the depths of sorrow.

I believe I sent you my name on facebook so you can friend me if you want to.  If you do start a Chip-In, I might not be in a position to donate mush, but I have a lot of friends, each of whom can donate a little, and it all adds up.

I look forward to following Neva's progress, and to more celebrating in the near future.

Neva's Mom,

You and your beautiful dog are in my thoughts and prayers, such a tragic tale.  But, I am so glad Neva is making so much progress, what a wonderful blessing and I hope that she continues to heal.  We will all be here thinking of you and what you are going through.
