Some of you may know that my son's (Josh) dog, Sarge was stolen from his house on Friday night, April 02.  It's 2 weeks tonight, and we feel that we must accept the fact that Sarge will not be coming back home.  Our problem is...  what do we tell my 7 yr old Grandson (Josh's son)?  This little boy loves Sarge and will be heartbroken.  We would deeply appreciate any advice anybody could give on what to say to Jay.  Thank you all.

Oh Tom ~

I'm so sorry Sarge isn't back home.  What a sad thing, to have to talk to Jay about someone dog-napping Sarge. It's a delicate thing to have to talk about, isn't it?  My grandson is also 7, and I know he would be terribly puzzled by this kind of discussion.

I can only imagine that it could really shake a little guy's security, so it will be important to stress that he is safe, but probably without actually saying that (there's always the chance that saying it might cause questions to arise that might not even be of concern to him). What a dilemma!   I wish I had some marvelous advice or suggestions, but I'm just coming up blank right now.  I'm sure if you follow your heart, you will find a balance that works for Jay.  You are such a good comforter.

I would engage your grandson in making posters to put up around the neighborhood. Telling him Sarge is lost and you need others to help look for him. Have him watch you print some picture or ask him to describ him and you can do the writing then have him walk with you and staple them to the telephone poles.  Kids like to participate it will make him feel like he's helping Sarge, I think.

That's a great suggestion, Shadoe!  "Lost" is a much better way to deal with this than "stolen," which implies kidnapping, and is terrifying to children (for good reason!).  Way to go!

I SO agree Shadoe!    What a great way to handle it ..... though you may feel like you are giving him "false hope" but, really, even if you think you've resigned yourself,  there is ALWAYS hope .....
I just can't believe that happened to your son's dog  ...........  it's horrible.
Not knowing would be the worst thing ....
I recently read a story about a dog that had been stolen, and it was retrieved because of flyers.  A guy saw it and thought it looked like the dog his neighbor had suddenly appeared with and sure enough, it was the stolen dog and he made his way back home :)               There are happy endings out there ..........
I hope and pray your family has one ........  God Bless you all .....
prayers, positive thoughts, toes, fingers and lots of paws crossed Tom
